Family Therapy is offered often by psychologists but can also be offered by other therapists and counsellors and is focused on mending the relationships between people in a family.
The whole family participate (usually parents and kids) and they all are present for each session. The goal is to help with communication within the family and develop an understanding of each other. This can be helpful when there is ongoing conflict or sadness in a family, or when there is a severe illness or grief that is affecting everyone. People usually attend 4 to 5 sessions of family therapy and it requires a commitment of the family (or at least most of the family) to attend.
Who would benefit from seeing a family therapist?
Parents who feel they need to improve communication in their families, who have problems with family conflict, loss and grief in the family and families that have disagreements around house rules and expectations can all benefit.
